"T'would seem our rates has jumped ship." said Orin in a grim tone. "Now comes the question; where to?" He chuckled quietly to himself. "Quite the fun job indeed! Already so much going on!"

"Well, that looks rather unpleasant." Ephraim commented as he scanned the crowd for anyone suspicious.

The ship was beginning to list slightly as the fire brigade showed up, casting spells to spray down the ship from the water reservoirs attached to the docks every 50 feet. A winged being bypassed the gangplank, now tilting dangerously, and landed on the deck, disappearing below decks.

"The fire brigade has a demon now?" Aurelia said, raising her eyebrows slightly, "Interesting."

Ephraim noticed a figure quietly detach themselves from the back of the crowd.

*

Kestrel rushed out on deck, but there were no figures to be seen. She ran her hands through her hair agitatedly.

"Oh boy, this is not a good way to start a bounty hunting career. Got any ideas, Orin?"

Orin was scanning the surroundings as he spoke.  "Well,  we've got a couple options here.  There's the possibility he's bolted for a safehouse; questionably so,  I might add. Another option is an assassin was laying in wait and is currently trailing our good bookkeeper for a good opportunity to slit his throat." Orin stroked his beard thoughtfully.  "Do we have even the slightest clue where he might have scampered to?"

Finding a patch of shadows, Thea shifted into her fox form and began sifting through the various scents around her. She noticed the movement that caught Ephraim's eye and followed it.

Ephraim tapped Aurelia on the shoulder and gestured towards the figure with his head. "Someone's on the move."

"You go first, I'll follow," Aurelia said before fading into the crowd.

The figure continued along the docks, stopping to light a cigarette at one point before continuing to another ship.

*

Kestrel shook her head.

"I don't think he really has anywhere to go. He knows the place he was staying isn't safe anymore and I think this is the first time he's been in the city."

Orin clenched his teeth in frustration. After some debate, he came to a begrudging conclusion. He looked back into the room. "Did he leave anything here? Anything at all?" Orin scrounged around furiously. "A pencil, paper, hair, anything?" then he added, "you can cast a spell, right?"

Thea watched the man from the shadows, suspicious of his behaviour. She looked around and saw that the others followed too.

Ephraim hid in the shadows and watched the ship from his hidden position, his hand on his holster.

The suspicious figure wasn't there long before they were joined by another person.

"Success?" the newcomer asked.

"Not that I can confirm," the first figure said disgustedly in a clipped, obviously female voice, "Too many people too close. I told you we should have just gone aboard and slit his throat if he was there."

*

Kestrel shook her head.

"Nothing I can think of... He didn't change for bed and we've already washed up his dinner dishes. Maybe we should look anyways."

She walked back inside the ship to look for anything the bookkeeper might have left. Meanwhile, still on the deck, Orin noticed the hatch to the hold swing slowly open.

"Hm" Ephraim vocalised, leaning over to Aurelia to whisper, "I am thinking we might want to ask some questions of these folks at some point. What say you?"

Going into a low crouch, Orin reached into a pouch in his bag. Feeling for the right markings on the top, he selected a glass bulb filled with a mixture of chemicals. Testing the wind, he readied his throwing arm. If it was the bookkeeper coming out of the hold, he'd make sure he was all right. If not, whoever it was would get a kick out of the knockout gas. His bow was ready in his other hand in case that failed.

Aurelia raised an eyebrow at Ephraim.

"I think we may not need to ask if they keep talking."

*

The person coming out of the hold didn't appear to see Orin. They slowly came out of the hold, lowering the hatch carefully behind them.

Orin slipped the bulb back into his bag and took aim with his bow.  Training the shot on the individual,  he shouted, "Halt! Who goes?" He readied himself in case the figure made any sudden moves.

Ephraim shrugged and went back to listening to the shadowy figures.

The first figure continued, "This whole thing has just been a gods-damned mess from the beginning. Whoever let that pencil-pusher make it to the skies needs to lose their job. And that extraction team was a disgrace, getting taken out by a few badly equipped bounty hunters."

The other figure held up a hand.

"Don't judge them too quickly. They took out both members of the extraction team inside a few minutes without our bookkeeper getting a scratch. And their leader is a master at losing a tail--it took close to an hour, but I lost track of them completely. Who knows who they're working for."

*

The figure's hands shot into the air with record speed.

"Okay, I'll come back! Please don't shoot!"

Orin recognized the bookkeeper's nervous voice.

Still keeping wary, Orin called for kestrel. "What were you doing below deck?" Orin asked the bookkeeper. "You should know the safest place for you is inside the cabin and out of sight." He lowered his bow, but kept the arrow knocked. "Come on back in, and while you're at it, mind filling me in on what you were doing?"

Huh, Ephraim thought, for once it really was as easy as it seemed. At the second figure's comment, he cocked an eyebrow at Aurelia.

Aurelia responded with a cat-like grin. The first figure spoke again.

"Could be any of the major shipping families. The gods only know what he found in those records. I think it was a mistake to go after him directly. We should have waited until we knew where he stashed those records. Now we can only hope that they were on that ship."

The second figure shrugged, "He booked passage on it, we know that much. I don't think we should give up on finding him. The leader isn't anything special, but someone might know something about those guns. Far more accurate than they should have been, which means he has dwarvish connections. And the bookkeeper's escort--someone's got to know her."

"Oh, I think I do," said the first figure, puffing on the cigarette, "Trouble is, there's no way of knowing who she's working for. Could even be us. No, I say we go after those records. He may have bribed someone to stash them, but we have deeper pockets. And we can be much more convincing."

*

The bookkeeper's chin jutted up in defiance.

"I'd rather you shot me, if it's all the same, rather than handing me over to the Marids."

"who ever said we were going to do that?" said Orin. "we aren't working for the Marids. As you've no doubt noticed, the Marids only want you dead, and whatever secrets you have to lost. We, on the other hand, would like to keep you very much alive and well."

"So you can sell me like a piece of meat?" The bookkeeper shook his head, "I know that you're bounty hunters and I suspect the price on me alive is better than the price on me dead, maybe good enough to risk the wrath of the Marids. It doesn't much matter to me who you're selling to, since my chances aren't very good either way."

It was about this point that Thea approached the ship.

"Well, while this man's paranoia is certainly entertaining," Thea mentioned to Orin and Kestrel, "we have a more pressing matter. Several suspicious characters appear to have destroyed a portion of a passenger ship. I left while the others were tailing them, yet given the timing I would assume that this is not a coincidence."

Ephraim looked from the shadowed figured to Aurelia. "Any thoughts on how to handle this one?" He asked in a whisper.
